Biodegradable

When packaging misses the circular waste stream

biodegradable end of life vs. circular recycling

Any time a piece of packaging is used once, no matter how it is disposed of, is considered “single use” and is categorized as still being in a linear economy, versus a circular one where packaging could be reused or up cycled into another use- keeping it out of the waste stream all together. Ideally, the material it is made out of should be able to be recycled and reused again, but also biodegradable just in case it were to ever miss the recycling stream.

We shouldn’t rely on biodegradability as a crutch for establishing a more circular economy that implores recycling and reusing first.

The market for eco-friendly food packaging in particular is expanding as a result of rising consumer awareness of how harmful the end of life is for single use plastics and non-biodegradable packaging. There was a plastic bag found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the ocean’s deepest tench, reaching nearly 36,000 ft (10,975 meters) in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean. This is officially the deepest known piece of plastic trash.
